What’s self-titled?
self-titled began as the escape plan of former editors from DIW, the first underground music magazine to put rising artists like TV on the Radio, Queens of the Stone Age, Animal Collective and LCD Soundsystem on its cover.
Before going on an indefinite hiatus in 2023, s/t spent 15 years bouncing in between a daily site and fully interactive app that featured the work of many writers (J Bennett, Andy Beta, T. Cole Rachel, Kim Taylor Bennett) and photographers (Ture Lillegraven, Ysa Pérez, Aaron Richter, Jeremy Liebman) that went onto bigger and better places. Not to mention stories on such up-and-coming musicians as Kendrick Lamar, Charli XCX, Disclosure, Grimes, Florence + the Machine and Azelia Banks.
Rather than refresh its longtime home as a feed-the-beast operation built around song premieres and record reviews very few people actually read, self-titled is in the midst of a major transformation — a return to its zine-inspired roots.
To give you a glimpse of our mission and voice, self-titled’s Substack will be split between free best-of articles (“Something Old”) from our archives and paid subscriber-only pieces (“Something New”) that include everything from exclusive mixes, playlists and guides to recommendations from our short-lived ambient site (self | centered) and a new interview series examining masculinity, creativity and fatherhood.
Why Substack?
Because we’d rather take our time with thoughtful, intentional content than worry about chasing release schedules and news cycles. It’s simply not sustainable.
We’d also rather build a genuine community around a small-but-mighty audience than rely on a rickety business model of banner ads and click-through rates.
